Broken Pelvis Compensation

The pelvis is a bone that goes from one side of the body to the other located at the lower end of the body, or trunk or a person.  The pelvis actually consists of three bones (ilium, ischium and pubis).  There is one socket on each side of the pelvic bone for the hip joint.  The pelvic bone houses many organs as well as having large blood vessels and important nerves that go through it.

Sometimes when a pelvis is broken there can be a substantial amount of bleeding due to all of the vessels around and through the pelvic area.  A broken pelvis can cause plenty of pain but the person should recover from the injury.  The more serious broken pelvis incidents are when the organs within the pelvis are hurt due to the pelvis fracturing.   When a person has osteoporosis the bones are weaker, and can break easily.  The pelvis is one of the bones most often breaks with osteoporosis, most times this happens when a fall takes place.

Causes of a broken pelvis are usually:

• A fall
• Automobile accident
• A high impact accident
• Osteoporosis

Symptoms of a broken pelvis:

• Pain around the pelvic region
• Swelling in the pelvic area
• Bruising in the area

Treatment of a broken pelvis

An X-ray will be done to find out about the fracture and blood vessels and nerves will be examined to see if there seems to be damage.  If the fracture is very minor, pain medication and walking on crutches may allow the person a complete recovery.  Sometimes blood thinners are given to eliminate the risk of blood clots in the legs due to months of walking restrictions.  In moderate fractures, surgery is necessary most of the time and plates and/or screws are inserted.   When the broken pelvis injury is very serious, such as in the case of a high impact accident, a surgeon may have to stabilize the pelvic area.  This way they will be able to work on the nerves and organs that have been damaged within.  To stabilize the pelvic area, also called external fixator, screws are put in the bones on both sides that are attached to a frame on the outside of the body.  In these cases the recovery really depends on the other injuries involved.  If the bleeding from the blood vessels can be stopped and the organs can be repaired, the outcome of the recovery would be positive.
